What is it?
This is the highest award in Guiding, which is very tough to achieve.
You must register to start it, and you have three years from your registration date plus a planned break to complete it.
There are sections to this award:

1) Service in Guiding
2) Outdoor Challenge
3) Personal Skill Development
4) Community Action
5) Residential experience

  Service in Guiding Element 1
Carry out practical Guiding service for a period of 60 hours. At least 20 hours should consist of 1 activity or project.

Element 2
attend a residential guiding event and accept a responsibility that is new to you or furthers your experience. The event should last for at least 2 days and 2 nights.

Element 3
Take an active part in the planning of an event, whcih will involve the participation of at least 2 units

This mostly deals with helping out with another unit, Under eighteens may be young leaders, over eighteens become young guiders. You must complete ...hours service.

Things some of us have done:
Worked with a Guide unit
Worked with a Brownie unit
Been on camp/holiday

Organising division swimming gala

Becoming a member of the region youth forum, recently been set up

Residential Experience

Participate in a residential experience run by the guide association or anther agency lasting no less than 3 days, where the majority of participants are unknown to you

What we have done:

Gone on an international trip- I did Eurosteps in 2002, where with a group from region organises a trip.
Gone to a region youth forum weekend

What you can do:
Go on a Queen's Guide residential.

  Personal Skill Development Over a minimum of 60 hours over 12 months, take an existing skill to a new personal level or start a new skill and develop it.

Some of us have:

Learnt to drive and passed their driving test. (took 52 lessons!!) Obviously that is for over seventeens!!

Outdoor Challenge

Element 1
Before undertaking the challenge you must:
a) Have ciompleted the 1st 6 modules of either the senior section permit or the camp and holiday scheme

b)Undertake further training as required to prepare you for the challenge.

Element 2
Paticipate in an exploration or expedition to last 4 days accompanied by your peers

This is a tough section and none of us have completed it yet

  Community Action Over a 12 month period undertake two projects about a chosen topic. One should be of a practical nature, the other should be research orientated.


This is a tough section, where you must complete a project on a local, regional and international level.

What we are doing:

A project on the elderly, then going to visit them

A project on water pollution, then helping to clean up the local river
